Lolling tongue, relaxed body, wagging tail? In this article, we’ll talk about how to keep your house clean with pets.
It’s always a joy to see pets having fun and feeling cozy at home. After all, they’re like family to us already. But, fun for them sometimes means trouble for us. Drooling over the carpet, spreading fur everywhere, bringing in dead things, rolling over gross stuff—you name it!
These are all fun to watch but a hassle to clean after. It’s a dilemma. How do we keep our pets happy while maintaining house cleanliness?
You don’t have to wonder anymore, for Cleanrific prepared a list of practical tips to keep the mess at bay while pets have the time of their lives every day.
House Clean With Pets
1. Regularly scrub the litterbox
If you own a cat, you know very well how strong its dump can smell. Hence, it’s essential to clean the litterbox regularly. The ideal frequency of emptying and scrubbing is twice a day. This will ensure that the smell does not linger for too long on the container.
Apart from the daily cleaning, make time to deep clean the litterbox at least once a week to preserve the container’s quality and ensure that microbes are completely removed. Deep-cleaning includes the following steps:
- Emptying
- Disinfection using a bleach solution
- Replacement of sand
It’s also advised to replace your litterbox at least once a year.
2. Collect fur using latex gloves
Pets like dogs shed a lot to keep them in good shape. Consequently, layers of their hair can be seen almost everywhere in the house—sofa, bed, carpets, and even bathrooms.
Unfortunately, it’s pretty difficult to remove some hair strands completely because of their short size. One solution to this is the use of latex gloves. The friction between the gloves and the upholstery creates static energy that readily attracts the pet hair. Simply rub the gloves in a single direction and observe how most hair is picked up.
Other pet hair remedies are lint rollers, sponges, and regular brushing.
3. Use baby wipes skewer to clean hard-to-reach spots
Sometimes dogs and cats like to hang around narrow spaces and end up leaving their dirt in cracks and other hard-to-reach areas. One effective solution to this problem is using a skewer with baby wipes wrapped around it to clean every nook and cranny.
4. Use baking soda to clean upholsteries and pet beds
Baking soda is safe and effective in neutralising odours and removing microbes. It’s also easy to use as you only have to sprinkle a considerable amount of baking soda on the upholsteries and pet beds. Let the powder stay for about 20 minutes before vacuuming.
This will ideally neutralise the odour and remove light stains from the fabric.
5. Deodorise carpets with vinegar
Of course, we can’t forget the usual disinfecting partner of baking soda—vinegar!
Fill a spray bottle with equal parts water and vinegar. Then, spray the solution on carpet stains. Next, let the spot dry, and voila! You’ll notice that the lingering smells are gone.
6. Use enzyme-based cleaners to remove stains and odours
If you’re still unconvinced with the vinegar and baking soda’s deodorising abilities, you may also use enzyme-based cleaners. These products contain useful microorganisms that can eat away the odour-causing organic matter. Without this organic matter as a food supply, bacteria on the surface will eventually die.
All you have to do is spray enough on the target area and let the solution stay for a few hours or days by covering the sprayed area with plastic or wet fabric.
7. Cover the drain with a hair catcher
Pet hair often fall off during bath time. Unfortunately, this often clogs the shower drain. You can keep the fur out of the drain by covering it with a bath mat or a meshy scrubbing pad. Make sure to either wedge the pads with a stopper or clip them with bobby pins to keep them in place.
8. Deep-clean pet items
Pet items, like dog harnesses, collars and toys, can quickly get smelly as pets frequently use them. If neglected, these items would get too smelly and spread the unpleasant odour all over the house.
To deep clean pet items, simply submerge them in a bowl of shampoo and hot water for 30 minutes. Then, thoroughly rinse the items with cold water and air-dry.
9. Invest in practical pet items
Cleaning can also be made easy if the items we buy for our pets are easy-clean, such as pet beds with removable covers.
10. Keep your pets clean
Finally, always keep your pets clean. After all, it would be useless to clean home surfaces and pet-related items if our pets themselves are untidy and smelly. Hence, to keep your house clean with pets give them a good wash every time they go out and start smelling funny.
